Phone data speed types: 5G, 4G, H+, H… What do they mean?

phone data speed

Your cell phone communicates with you. Knowing what phone data speed you have is essential because it allows you to know how fast your internet connection is when you’re using your mobile data.

But how to know what the different levels of phone data speed are? And more importantly, how do you identify which one you have at any given moment?

So-called smartphones are actually smart, and they know how to identify our needs. That is why they have a code to inform us of the speed we receive.

Even if we are not aware of it, we need to know at all times why our latest tweets are not loading, or why we can’t open our email. Low space in the internal memory? Insufficient battery? Outdated application?

In most cases the reason why this happens is that we have a slow connection that prevents us from fluently accessing Internet content.

That’s why there is a code that allows us to identify the strength and speed of the signal we are receiving. And of course, the latest to arrive has been 5G.

Phone data speed types and how to identify them

Surely you have noticed those little symbols at the top of your screen more than once. Along with the time and battery level, you’ll find those “letters” that are actually codes indicating the speed of your mobile network. Here’s what they mean, from slowest to fastest.

GPRS (Global Packet Radio Service) – “G“. Low speed.

 Enhanced Data Rates – “E“.

3rd Generation – “3G“.

HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) – “H“.

 HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access)  – “H+“.

4th Generation (or LTE – Long Term Evolution) – “4G“.

5th Generation – “5G“. Maximum speed

5G has been the last to reach our smartphones. If you still can’t enjoy it, remember that there are many reasons why your mobile Internet speed may decrease, specially if you need to recharge your mobile data because you’ve run out of them!

In conclusion, mobile Internet has come a long way in recent years, offering users different options to meet their connectivity needs. 5G is the most advanced technology, offering faster download and upload speeds, lower latency and greater simultaneous connection capacity. However, 4G and H+ are still popular and widely used options.
